JOB TITLE: Lead Software Engineer- Perl
SALARY: £73,521 - £81,690
LOCATION(S): Watford
HOURS: Full-time
WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days, or 40% of your time, at our Watford site.

About this Opportunity

Strive to deliver the highest quality customer driven software whilst continually challenging, motivating, mentoring and supporting their engineering teams. They will work in cross-disciplinary teams delivering exciting customer driven solutions and high quality software and showcase excellent interpersonal and communication skill whilst efficiently working across the project life cycle to ensure software operates as intended. This is a leadership level role and will blend both deep domain and technical expertise within a feature team and excellent passion for mentoring and developing people in a “player-coach” model

Takes ownership for delivering a prescribed budget for own area of the organisation and/or conducts sophisticated analyses on budget progress in other areas while working within established systems.
Personally meets customer needs related to standard products and services and/or supervises a team of customer advisors.
Grows own capabilities by pursuing and investing in personal development opportunities and develops the capabilities of direct reports by working within existing development framework; provides specialised training or coaching in area of expertise to others throughout the organisation.
Identifies shortcomings and suggests improvements to existing processes, systems and procedures, then delivers a plan for a small element of a change management programme with guidance from a project/programme manager.
Highlights shortcomings and suggests improvements in current IT Security processes, systems and procedures within assigned unit and/or discipline
Being an acknowledged Technical Authority on your tech stack, you will be expected to maintain the architectural vision across all different workstreams and identifying the right tool for the job.
Working with members of the business at all levels, to formulate technical solutions to meet business needs and communicating effectively with partners, establishing relationships with users around the business.
Communicating with third-party developers when we collaborate with other development houses.

What you’ll need

Delivers prescribed outcomes for area of responsibility by working within established knowledge management systems and delivers outcomes by handling others and working within established systems.
Sets short term objectives and helps own the performance of direct reports by working within performance management systems.
Explores issues and/or needs to establish potential causes, related issues and barriers.
Defines, delivers, and adapts specialized products/services to meet customer needs by selecting the best possible approaches available within established systems.
Delivers prescribed outcomes for a designated area, using risk management systems to ensure the organisation is not exposed to undue risks.
Delivers prescribed outcomes for area of responsibility by improving and/or working within an established supplier management plan for area of responsibility by working within established strategic planning systems.
Analyses specified problems and issues to find the best technical and/or professional solutions.
Develops product specifications while designing testing procedures and standards.

And any experience of these would be really useful

Deep knowledge of your preferred programming language (Perl or Ruby on Rails) as well as knowledge of other tech stacks such as JavaScript and expertise with version control (Git)
Experience with a range of architectural design patterns as well as database design and development ( Oracle and/or PostgreSQL)
Experience managing other developers and expertise with automated unit / integration testing as well as driving process and tooling changes
Experience working with a wider development team (QA, BAs etc) as well as agile environment with handling database changes
Good experience working with database Stored Procedures and integrating with APIs and with continuous integration and continuous deployment
Ability to work independently and self-manage with great written and verbal communication skills
