Our integrated approach combines expert research and distribution, a range of investment banking services, and an execution services hub that provides liquidity to the UK capital markets.

The Department

The Development team focus on in house development of the Firm’s electronic trading capability as well as automation and efficiency improvements across all business functions. You would join our small team of experienced developers that work on a variety of projects involving in-house systems which implement:

Real-time equity trading, incorporating FIX order and quote flow from both industry networks and dedicated links
Electronic market making across domestic, European and international instruments
Business workflow management for research, compliance and middle/back-office functions
Internal data analysis tools covering areas such as trading, commission and marketplace metrics

The team comprises 9 developers, responsible for deciding on and managing our own working practices. This gives us the opportunity and freedom to work how we want, but also the responsibility of making sure we do so properly and professionally.

The team report to the Head of Development, who is very much part of the development headcount, but otherwise enjoy a flat team structure where decision-making and responsibility is shared.

Role responsibilities

Responsibilities and tasks include, but are not limited to:

Provide support to all users within the firm in all aspects of the IT infrastructure which will require supporting the following technologies:

Java 11 servers, supported by Python 3.6 for simpler scripts and RAD requirements;

Oracle and SQL Server database persistence;

C# front ends;

Vaadin web apps to be replaced with React;

KDB time-series storage and analysis;

Chronicle-based infrastructure to present time series data through our trader front-end;

Servers deployed on Linux, RHEL 9;

SQL Server Analysis and Reporting Services;

Influx and Grafana for system instrumentation;

Messaging infrastructure leveraging Informatica UltraMessaging;

Usual tools: Intellij, Rider, GIT, TeamCity, YouTrack.

Develop and deliver software to address a wide range of business problems

Work with stakeholders, analysing their requirements and the wider problem to determine what is needed

Work on your own or with others from the development team, depending on the size of the project at hand

Plan and organise your projects so they are delivered under appropriate timescales and be flexible where relevant factors change

Ask for help and provide support to others to ensure yours and the teams’ outputs are functionally complete, performant and supportable

First and second line support of our systems

Other responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Green-field development
- Extensions of existing applications
- Day-to-day maintenance and enhancement

9. Have an understanding of the regulatory environment, and values and abilities consistent with the FCA conduct rules

Key Capabilities & Knowledge

2.1 or higher degree in a technical discipline

At least 5-7 years development experience using React

Exposure to and participation in:
- High performance, distributed and multi-threated systems
- Understanding interfaces between and separation of interconnected modules/systems
- Front to back involvement
- Decomposition of complex problems into manageable phases for development and delivery
- Understanding the need to deliver high quality code to minimise or eliminate long-term support and maintenance burdens
- Use of automated, unit and functional testing with a pragmatic approach to when and to what depth these should be applied

Experience of the following would be advantage:
- SQL databases (Oracle, MSSQL or Sybase) and queries
- C# / WPF GUI developmen
- Java Python scripting/simple programming, or using libraries such as SciPy
- KDB querying and management/maintenance
- React web development

A working knowledge of Linux.

Previous experience in the financial sector is preferable but not essential
